BOPITEKELO

The Bopitikelo Community Centre (1990) in Molatedi village was conceived as a meeting place; a centre for the reinvigoration of the cultural history of a people: individuals who had been largely divested of their traditions through disruption by the colonial and apartheid regimes.

The project again involved a long process (as part of a multilateral funded Rural Development Initiative) conducted to facilitate the election of a committee who represented a fair cross-section of the complex local community. The committee chose the site (at the edge of the Madikwe Safari Park) and identified the need for a venue for community and social functions; a place facilitating dialogue between local communities and visitors from Southern Africa and abroad; a place of reconciliation.
